Phillies C J.T. Realmuto Exits Game Due to Knee Injury

A Deeper Look into the Injury

Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto left Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning due to right knee discomfort. Realmuto was injured while attempting to field a pitch in the dirt. He immediately grabbed his knee and was visibly in pain. The Phillies announced that Realmuto underwent an MRI on Wednesday, which revealed a Grade 1 MCL sprain.

What is a Grade 1 MCL Sprain?

A Grade 1 MCL sprain is a mild tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL), which is a ligament that runs along the inside of the knee and helps to stabilize it. Grade 1 MCL sprains are typically treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). Surgery is rarely necessary.

How Long Will Realmuto Be Out?

The Phillies have not yet announced a timetable for Realmuto's return. However, Grade 1 MCL sprains typically take 2-4 weeks to heal.

What Does This Mean for the Phillies?

Realmuto's injury is a significant blow to the Phillies, who are already without catcher Bryce Harper. Garrett Stubbs is expected to start in Realmuto's place. Stubbs is a capable backup catcher, but he is not as good as Realmuto. The Phillies will need Stubbs to step up in Realmuto's absence.
